Minggu Orientasi 2023

Sesi persekolahan tahun 2023/2024 bermula dengan minggu orientasi. Suatu pendekatan baharu yang cuba diperkenalkan oleh pihak Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia. Secara peribadi, saya menyambut baik sarana ini. It is a long awaited policy. Selari dengan aspirasi Falsafah Pendidikan Negara dimana salah satu tunjang utamanya membentuk keperibadian murid. 

Kelihatan santai dengan aktiviti dan program di peringkat sekolah, namun secara psikologinya, murid dapat mempersiapkan diri dengan sesi persekolahan seterusnya. Tidak terburu-buru memulakan kelas akademik sepertimana sebelum ini. 

Dalam pada itu, guru-guru juga berpeluang berinteraksi dengan ibu bapa yang hadir sama sepanjang minggu. Tambahan, sekolah kami mengadakan sesi gotong royong menghias kelas. Cocok pada saat dan waktunya. Ibubapa kini tahu realiti kekurangan fasiliti yang dihadapi warga sekolah hingga ada yang sanggup mengeluarkan duit poket sebagai belanja menghias kelas. 

Secara keseluruhannya, program ini saya percaya merupakan satu permulaan yang baik. It's a good start for an amazing year ahead. Berkemungkinan ada kekurangan dan kelompongan sepanjang penganjuran, namun, sebagai 'pilot project' ianya berjaya set a new benchmark. Kita mengharapkan ada penambahbaikan di masa akan datang bilamana ianya menjadi tradisi dan kelaziman setiap awal sesi persekolahan.

IPITEx 2023, Thailand

We started off our 2023 year with an amazing project. The 'projek inovasi' that had occupied our entire life since two months back finally comes to an end. It did felt like a dream though - to be able to bring a delegation from such a humble school to Bangkok, Thailand for an international event. 

The event was held on the 2nd until 6th February 2023 at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC), Thailand which organised by the National Research Council of Thailand, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. This event is held in conjunction of Thailand Inventors' Day which falls on every 2nd February. 

Our school had come out with an invention called VDS - which stands for Ventilated Drying Storage. The invention is a multipurpose shoe rack that is equipped with RFID system for locking and securing, drying system, antibacterial, anti odour, solar panel and rechargeable battery. Those systems are run by the Arduino UNO and Arduino MEGA. 

Our innovation successfully secured the Hong Kong Special Award on our very first day as well as a bronze medal during the closing ceremony. Quite an achievement I would say for a first time ever of participation. This awards set the bar high for any upcoming participations. 

I would say kudos to Kak Azyan, our Chef-de-Mission who prepared all the documentations and going through all the hefty process with the organiser, State education Dept., MoE etc. And to the team of 'scientists' led by Cikgu Hiszua for their amazing effort to come out with such invention.

Congratulations to our two representatives from SK Jalan U3 as well, Faheem and Leishkmerrah for being able to give such an amazing presentations throughout the whole exhibition days. as the first international representatives from our school, you two had done such a tremendous job. And thanks to their supportive parents and family who give full encouragement since day one.

And last but not least, to our Headmaster, En Rozali as this innovation team is his brainchild. Thank you for starting off the spark and hopefully more innovations and STEM project will follow suit. 

 

Ready to take off!

It is been a long hiatus and now I am more than ready to start all over again. May Allah give me strength to execute all the plans which are long overdue. Ameen.

Edufluencers Reignited

2019 was the year when I got selected to join the Edufluencer program. To carry such a big name was quite a burdensome, that I decided to stay out of the radar for the whole two years. Nobody in my school knew the 'edufluencer' title whatsoever, up until now. 

And today, marks a new beginning. After three days of being 'reignited' by the amazing PADU team, I feel the urge of taking up my responsibility and embrace all the opportunities that lies in front of me. It is time for me to offer my small contributions for the education community, rather than just keep in silence.

Ramadan Kareem

This year around, I tried to light up the spirit of Ramadan by having a simple and minimalist Ramadan decoration around the house. We often decorate our house for Raya year in and year out, so why not this time around we spice up the Ramadan celebration with some decorations. Something quite different. 

My wife and I put up some wall decorations where everything was hand-made by using the papers and cardboards. And the ideas, without any doubt are from the internet. 

And of course, a few selections of Middle Eastern menu filled up our dinner table: home-made pistachio baklava - made with spring rolls, the chicken Arabian styled rice (Nasi Arab) and my favourite mint tea.

We had our dinner quite early before getting ready to pray the Maghreeb, Isya and of course our very first Taraweeh together. I felt so blessed. Alhamdulillah.

Cultural Class Lesson: Malaysian Traditional Costume

This week I had planned on introducing the Malaysian traditional costume to the Grade 2 students. Since they have zero knowledge of English and the time given for each lesson was 40 minutes, I had simplified the contents, and activity so that the objective outlined could be successfully achieved.

The objective of the lesson is to introduce the Korean students with 4 types of Malaysian traditional costumes namely; Baju Melayu, Baju Kurung, Cheongsam and Saree. After showing the students the different types of costume via powerpoint slides show and realia, students then make a human paper chain comprising these four types of costume.

New Home, New Town

My partner Saif and I were posted in a small town called Daeso-myun, under the administrative district of Eumseong-gun. The town was relatively small as compared to Seoul, where lots of factories located here and it seemed like the locals also did some agricultural activities such as vegetable farming and growing their rice. It was a bit similar like Tanjung Malim town. 

As for the accommodation, we were lucky to be given a two-room apartment for our three months stay in South Korea. The house was not that big and not too small. Perhaps around 800+ square feet. More than enough for me. The owner provided two beds, a refrigerator, and a washing machine. While the other appliances such as rice cooker, iron, and kitchen utensils had been prepared by our mentor in prior. 

Our mentor, Min was very helpful. He brought us around the town, showing the bus station, supermarket and even brought us to the phone shop to purchase a sim card. He also brought us shopping for some household items and groceries.

At night we went to the Halal restaurant located in the town. Approximately about 10 minutes of walking. The restaurant's owner was an Uzbekistan, so the food sold are traditional Uzbek meals. I had my roasted chicken for my dinner at the shop. A week without being able to eat any chicken had finally paid-off.

Local Adjustment Program: Day 05 - Welcoming Luncheon

Today marks the final day of our local adjustment training. We reached APCEIU early after checking out from the hotel. The ceremony which assembled all the participants, mentors and principals from respective schools, was officiated by the director of APCEIU, followed by the speech of the representatives from each country. Our country represented by Miss Aini, the officer from the Ministry of Education, Malaysia had given an exceptional speech. I did feel little touched realising that it was the last day that all of us would be together before everybody headed to the different part of South Korea. 

After the speeches, all participants from four countries performed their cultural dances. The participants from Thailand with their beautiful costume had performed the coconut shell dance. The Indonesian teachers had performed a dance from West Papua. The Mongolian teachers had performed their traditional dance and played their traditional musical instrument. And Malaysia with our extravagant traditional dance numbers consisting of overture dances, joget, kolatam and sumazau. We even ended our performance with joget lambak by which we also invited the audience to dance on the stage.

The luncheon ceremony ended at 2.00 pm. We bid farewell to each other and headed straight to our respective places with our own mentor. It was quite sad to be parted from other friends and knowing that Miss Aini will leave all of us in South Korea for three months was quite overwhelming.

Local Adjustment Training: Day 04

Our training today started with the slot creating effective lessons for foreign students and sharing good cases delivered by a lecturer from Yonsei University, one of the established public university in South Korea. She had given some tips regarding how to interact with the students and keeping the lesson as simple yet as engaging as possible. 

After having our lunch - surprisingly we had authentic Indian food for today's menu - we were taught some basic Korean and how to read hangeul characters. It looked easy but the more you learn it the more confused you would be. Hopefully, I would master the language in coming 3 months. 

At around 2.30 pm, we headed back to Lotte Hotel for the GCED conference. This time we would be able to attend a plenary session where I had decided to listen to a talk on forging educational theatre in teaching GCED. It was very interesting and new for me. I would probably study more on this in the mere future. 

At 6.00 pm we had our dinner at a restaurant near the hotel. Luckily we had the vegetarian pizza for the dinner and it was quite delicious. We had our rest for two hours before starting the dance practice at the gym.
